Clutch Live at The Anthem, October 28th, 2017

Since I'm a die-hard Clutch fan, I decided to purchase tickets to the October 28th show with Primus at The Anthem. The Anthem is a new venue that opened on October 12th in Southwest, Washington DC.

The Venue

After attending the show on Saturday night, I was very impressed with The Anthem venue. It was very easy to enter the facility and the staff were very friendly. As expected, the venue looked very clean and polished. The venue has two floors and holds between 2,500-6,000 people with balcony seating as well. I also noticed that the floor-level standing area was much larger than the 9:30 Club and the acoustics were fantastic as well.

The Show

The band played for an hour and forty minutes and powered through a sixteen song set; playing a variety of songs from their eleven album discography. The only time the band actually stopped to take a break was when the road crew had to briefly repair J.P. Gaster's drum set. They also tested out three new songs from their upcoming record. The band is expected to start recording in March of 2018.

At 8 pm, Clutch came on stage to the sound of Chuck Brown's 'We Need Money' and opened up the set with the crunchy intro riff to 'Firebirds.' The band followed up with pedal stomping 'Crucial Velocity,' the bluesy 'Gravel Road,' and 'A Quick Death in Texas' from their latest release; Psychic WarfareThe band also played 'Bubonic Blues' and the politically satirical 'How to Shake Hands' from their upcoming album. Other highlights included The Regulator and some epic jam sessions during Big News I & II, Escape From the Prison Planet, and Cypress Grove. Les Claypool (Primus) also joined the band on upright bass to perform Earthrocker. The band concluded the set with ElectricWorry/One Eyed Dollar and X-Ray Visions.

I have seen Clutch over five times and I must say, their stage presence was absolutely incredible. Neil Fallon's performance was characteristic of both a poet and a preacher. I was especially impressed with the lyrics from the new song 'How to Shake Hands,' which pokes fun at our elected officials and the current political process in the U.S.

The rest of the band's performance was spot on and they all demonstrated great musicianship throughout the entire show. The crowd energy was great as well and there were minimal distractions in regards to mobile phone use for photo and video.
